May 25, 1934 to May 4, 2024

Delbert, “Del” Mack a beloved resident of Grass Valley passed peacefully surrounded by his immediate family on May 4, 2024, at the age of 89.

Delbert was preceded in death by his father and mother, Ralph and Ruth Mack, siblings Dorothy Bankston, Leroy Mack, and Philip Mack.

His life will be celebrated, filled with memories of his ardent commitment, labor, and dedication to his family, church, friends, and his community.

Del was a humble, and peaceful man, whose life carried more weight and significance than mere words. He was born in Fairplay, Colorado, and grew up learning the values of hard work and determination from an early age. He moved to Grass Valley at the age of five and carried these values with him throughout his life and passed them on to his family and all who met and labored alongside him. Del was a tireless employee and foreman at the Grass Valley Steel Cast foundry, retiring after 42 years. He worked another 11 years at Sierra View Manor, until finally officially retiring.

Retirement was full of volunteering activities for Del. He was dedicated and faithful as a spiritual, and civic volunteer five days a week until a few months prior to his passing. Delbert selflessly volunteered for numerous agencies and organizations including the Grass Valley Police Department, Interfaith Food Ministry, Cancer Aid Thrift Shop, and Nevada County Blood Bank. He also volunteered for a program very dear to his heart called Babies out of Bondage. Together with his wife, Marian, they took in 12 infants over the span of 10 years, picking them up from Madera Community Hospital when they were two to three days old. They loved and cared for these babies as their own and kept them until their mothers were released from prison.

Del also was a “jack of all trades” as he loved to build and maintain many a vehicle, machine, and structure. He was a voracious reader. He especially loved to pray, study, and teach the Word of God which he did for most of his adult life. He was also a benefactor who helped establish, build, lead, and support a local assembly for many years here in Grass Valley, and was a faithful leader and member of Truth Tabernacle in Marysville.

Delbert’s love for his family was immeasurable. He was a devoted sibling, husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.

Del married his beloved wife, Marian, in 1957. Together they raised three daughters; Debbie (Mike) O’Brien, Sandy (Steven) Paul, and Diane (David) Naranjo. Del assisted in the delivery of all three daughters who were born at home and raised in Grass Valley. Del’s legacy, by his daughters, continues in his grandchildren, Kristyn McFarland, Aaron Naranjo, Zachary Naranjo, Greg Paul, and Casey Paul. He also leaves four great-grandchildren, Destini Allen, Devon McFarland, Rylie McFarland, and Jayce Naranjo. His living siblings are Celia Butler, Edie Cartwright, Arlen Mack, and Ted Mack. He also leaves many nieces and nephews.

Del treasured every moment spent with his loved ones and created countless cherished memories. His peaceful, yet unwavering support and guidance served as a strong foundation for his family, and his love will forever remain in their hearts.

A funeral service will be held in honor of Delbert at Hooper and Weaver Mortuary in Nevada City on Saturday, May 11, 2024, at 10:00 am, followed by Burial Services at Greenwood Memorial Gardens Cemetery. A viewing will be at 9:00 am.
