Michael Eugene Maynard

Michael Eugene Maynard, 77, passed away Monday, September 7, 2026, at Sutter Roseville Medical Center with his family by his side.
Michael “Mike” Maynard was born December 20, 1948, in Grass Valley, CA to Audrey Charlene West Maynard Fontana and Eugene Maynard. He attended Colfax Elementary School and graduated from Colfax High School with the Class of 1967. Mike was a proud Colfax resident who later coached CHS Track and Varsity Baseball.
Mike married Patricia Martin Dougherty in 1968; together, they had one child, Matt Maynard. He later married Carol Hilbert Lorang, his lifelong companion, on December 27, 1997, welcoming her children, Anthony J Lorang and Bonnie A Foucek into his life.
Mike was hired at the Placer County Sheriff’s Office in March 1973, where he served proudly for many years until his retirement on February 22, 2002. Throughout his 28 years of service, he received many awards and accolades and was a member of numerous tactical and investigative teams. Friends and family will remember Mike’s many eventful stories from his time with the Office. He credited his grandfather and three-time interim sheriff, Francis West, as his role model.
Mike was also a lifelong sportsman and fan; he played multiple sports in high school and later played outfield with local fast-pitch softball powerhouses, the Colfax Fireballs and Marson’s, throughout the 1960s, 70s and 80s. In his later years, Mike was an avid golfer and Colfax High sports fan, spending many Friday nights in the spotter box for the football team.
Mike is survived by his wife of 29 years, Carol; son, Matt (Amanda) Maynard; granddaughters Lauren and Alexa Maynard; stepson Anthony (Melanie) Lorang; grandsons Alex and Nathan Lorang; stepdaughter Bonnie (Brian) Foucek; grandsons Dylan and Kenny Foucek; brother Lynn (Carol) Fontana; sister Marla (Ron) Gillard; and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his mother, Audrey Charlene Fontana; stepfather Ed Fontana; and father, Eugene Maynard.
The Maynard family will hold a memorial service on Mike’s favorite holiday, Halloween. Please join our family at 11:00 A.M. on October 31, 2026, at The Ridge Golf Club for a celebration of Mike’s life. All who knew and loved him are welcome.
