James Emry Burnes

Born January 18, 1976 – Passed January 27, 2026
James Emry Burnes, 50, of Grass Valley, California, passed away peacefully in his sleep on January 27, 2026, just nine days after celebrating his 50th birthday.
Born in Napa, California, Jim was the sixth of eleven children born to Ronald Eugene Burnes and Linda Johnson Burnes. Growing up in a large family, he developed the loyalty, resilience, and protective nature that defined his life.
Jim was the beloved husband of Karlie and the proud father of James, Sawyer, and Everlee. His children were the center of his world. He led them with strength, steadiness, and love.
As a young man, Jim worked as a professional fisherman in Alaska, enduring freezing waters and long seasons at sea. Those years shaped his grit and courage. Later, he built a long and respected career in construction, where he was known for his strong work ethic, integrity, and the pride he took in doing things the right way.
Jim was authentic and unwavering. He did not chase recognition or status. He stood firm in his values and showed up for those he loved, especially during life’s hardest seasons.
He is survived by his wife and children; his mother, Linda; and his siblings Christine, Julie, Jennifer, Ronald, Sarah, Ruth, John, Lori, and Michael.
He was preceded in death by his father, Ronald Eugene Burnes, and his brother William Burnes. The family finds peace in knowing they are reunited.
Funeral services will be held on February 28 at 1:00 PM at Hooper & Weaver Mortuary in Nevada City, California. A memorial gathering will follow. Jim will be laid to rest beside his brother Will and his grandmother Ruth.
Jim’s life was adventurous, courageous, and deeply meaningful. He leaves a legacy of loyalty and love that will carry on through his children and through all of us who will continue to live braver and love deeper because of him.
