Paul Noel

October 11, 1931 – October 22, 2025
Paul Noel, aged 94, passed away on October 22, 2025 in North San Juan, California.
Born on October 11, 1931, Paul had a remarkable capacity to appreciate experiences and people with little agenda and much heart. Despite this lack of need to be something special, he led a life marked by a diversity of accomplishments and a deep commitment to service and community. Paul served in the Air Force during the Korean War. After his military service he pursued higher education, attending Mexico City College where he studied Spanish Literature, followed by the University of Southern California, where he obtained a Master’s Degree in Social Work.
Professionally, Paul was dedicated to public service and environmental stewardship. He started his career working in juvenile hall, where he learned Zen meditation techniques. Later, he managed a mental health clinic in San Diego. His commitment to bettering society extended to reforestation efforts and landscaping, and he later focused on job development programs and helped others to find and sustain employment. He also became a certified timber feller and worked for the US Forest Service maintaining remote campgrounds including the group campsites at Faucherie Lake.
Paul was also deeply involved in his community’s spiritual life. He joined the Ring of Bone Zendo in North San Juan in the late 1970s. This involvement was reflected in his loving, funny, optimistic, and thoughtful nature, as he continually sought ways to connect with and support those around him.
An avid player of billiards and cribbage, Paul also enjoyed going on long drives, spending time with friends and family, and doing anything with his love and partner Judith Bell.
Paul is survived by his children, Matt Noel, Erin Noel, Caitlin Pitt, and daughter-in-law Raelynn Noel; his grandchildren, Everett Noel, Bay Noel, Savanna Ortegren, and Rowan Ortegren; his sister Grace Allen; and his long time courtesan and partner in crime, Judith Bell. He was preceded in death by his ex-wife, DeOnne Noel, with whom he maintained a friendship until her death.
Details of the memorial services are to be determined.
Contributions in memory of Paul can be made to a charity of one’s choice, honoring his legacy of generosity and service, and might include small acts of open-hearted empathy for your fellow human and non-human beings.
