Bonita “Bunnie” Brand

October 9, 1947 – February 15, 2025

Bonita “Bunnie” Brand, 77, of Grass Valley, died February 15, 2025. She was born to Alice Thompson and Anthony Zak on October 9, 1947 in Chicago, Illinois, an only child. Bunnie attended Round Lake High School, married and moved to Los Gatos, California.

Later, Bunnie moved to Truckee and retired as Postmaster to Portola after a long career with USPS. She moved to Grass Valley, completed an Associate Degree at Sierra College and was active in Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, a service organization. Bunnie loved tending her flock of chickens, dancing, art, and jewelry- making. She was well-known for her love of local music and bands, and continued dancing even as her health failed.

Bunnie is survived by her partner, Michael McCoy of Auburn, and numerous friends in the Nevada County communities who miss her ready smile and compassionate ear, a friend to all.

Bunnie was preceded in death by former husband and friend, John Brand, and her parents. She was interred at Hooper and Weaver, Nevada City. A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, July 12, at 11:00 am at the Unity Spiritual Center in Grass Valley.
