The daughter of Adolphus Richard and Frances Willard Guest, Kate grew up with a deep appreciation for education and community. She graduated from Chula Vista High School and continued her studies at San Diego State before transferring to Whittier College. Her passion for learning and teaching led her to a 35-year career in education, where she dedicated herself to nurturing the minds of 5th to 8th graders at Jones Elementary in San Diego. Kate retired on January 19, 1998, leaving behind a legacy of inspiration and dedication that was recognized by the Board of Education of San Diego City Schools.
On July 1, 1977, Kate married the love of her life, Richard F. Richiger, in Chula Vista. Although Richard predeceased her, their union was marked by mutual respect, shared adventures, and a profound love that spanned decades.
Kate’s zest for life was evident in her many passions. She was an active member of the Nevada City Elks Lodge #518, and a dedicated partner in the Soroptimist Women’s Investment Group. Her involvement in Soroptimist International of Grass Valley showcased her commitment to empowering women and girls through education and training.
Known for her great sense of humor and love for storytelling, Kate was a vibrant spirit who enjoyed traveling across the globe, indulging in concerts and musicals, and spending time with her beloved cat, CJ. Her love for football was unmatched, as she could recount every quarterback’s stats with enthusiasm. Kate also found joy in thrift shopping and cherished lunches with friends.
Kate is survived by her brother, A.W. Guest, and her two nephews, Tom (with his wife Kristen and their children, Parker and Payton) and Ryan Guest. Though she leaves no grandchildren or great-grandchildren, the impact of her life and teachings is felt deeply by all who knew her.
