James Allen Moon, Sr. of Nevada City, CA passed away July 31, 2026 at home at the age of 88.

Born in Warren County, Iowa on October 25, 1937 to Allen and Ada Moon.

Jim grew up in the little town of Washington where he enjoyed swimming in the Yuba River with his cousins and friends.

He attended Nevada Union High School where he enjoyed playing football for the N.U. Miners, graduating in 1956.

Jim married Eileen Ryberg July 3, 1956.

He was a member of the California National Guard. He worked for the Tahoe National Forest Service and served on the Nevada City council. He dedicated 27 years in law enforcement, becoming Chief of Police in Nevada City and working for the Nevada County Sheriff’s Department.

Jim and Eileen enjoyed traveling throughout the U.S. and especially being “snow birds” in Arizona.

Jim is survived by his wife of 70 years, Eileen, daughters Clarajean DeLuca (Art), Coral Moon, Shannan Moon (Amy), daughter-in-law Cindy Moon, 14 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren and in-laws he thought of like brothers and sisters.

He is preceded in death by his sons, Lance and Jim Jr., his parents Allen and Ada (Prall) Moon and grandparents James Arthur and Clara (Pearce) Moon.

He will be forever missed and remembered for his warmth and integrity of a great man.
