1937 – 2026

Kathleen Lucille Ryan, 88, passed away peacefully on July 22, 2026 surrounded by the love of her family.

Born in Redwood City, California, in 1937 to Giuseppe and Lena Spira, Kathleen graduated from Sequoia High School in 1955 and married Chuck Ryan in 1957. Together they raised their seven children in Salinas before moving to Grass Valley in 1980, where they owned and operated their plumbing supply business.

Kathy was devoted to her faith, family, community, and gardening. A strong believer in the importance of Catholic education, she generously gave her time and talents to each of her children’s schools. She worked in school libraries, served school lunches, and volunteered for and chaired countless school activities throughout the years. She was a dedicated volunteer at St. Patrick Catholic Church and an active member and leader of Soroptimist.

Kathy loved cooking and entertaining family and friends and was known for her delicious spaghetti sauce and polenta. She was also passionate about caring for the beautiful yard and garden she and Chuck created over many years, taking great pleasure in sharing this special space with family and friends.

Kathy was especially proud of a family tradition she started more than 40 years ago: bringing all of her children and grandchildren together in Lake Tahoe each summer for a week of family time. This tradition became a cherished part of the family and remains one of her lasting gifts to those she loved.

She is survived by her beloved husband of 69 years, Chuck Ryan; her children, Deborah Basham (Richard), Lawrence Ryan (Julie), Mary Adlesh (Steven), Daniel Ryan (Alice), Mark Ryan (Kim), Thomas Ryan (Debra), and Julie Oshita; 19 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and many extended family members and friends.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Tuesday, September 15th, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 235 Chapel Street, Grass Valley, CA 95945. A reception will follow in the church hall. A Rosary will be offered at 9:30 a.m. for those who wish to attend.

Kathy’s love, kindness, faith, and unwavering devotion to her family will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
