Karla Ann Thueson Nix

Karla Ann Thueson Nix, age 88, of Nevada City, California passed away March 29, 2026.

Karla was born October 24, 1937, in Twin Falls, Idaho to Jay Roberts Thueson, Sr and Beth Karla Brown Thueson. Karla grew up in Twin Falls within a very close family unit. She graduated from her high school class as the Valedictorian. Karla received her Bachelor of Science degree and teaching certificate from Brigham Young University in 1959. Karla loved teaching! In 1964 Karla moved to Berkley, California to teach school. This is where she met the love of her life and best friend, Thomas Elden Nix. They were married June 18, 1965, in the Oakland, California temple. Karla and Tom lived in Walnut Creek, San Jose and Nevada City, all where they raised their family and finally enjoyed their retirement years.

Karla loved her savior, Jesus Christ, deeply and was devoted to her religion, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. She believed profoundly in the power of prayer. She had many experiences of her prayers being heard and answered. She knew the Lord is aware of her and she felt his love. She was honored to serve in many “callings” within her church. It meant so much to her she was able to serve and teach the people within her congregation. She devoted much of her free time helping and teaching. She very much enjoyed the deep friendships she made.

Karla’s love for teaching extended to her elementary school classrooms. She was blessed to have taught in many areas of the country and world. Her teaching career started in Newark, CA where she taught third grade. She then taught second grade in Sandy, UT. During the spring of her year teaching in Sandy, she applied to teach overseas for the U.S. Army. That was the year the Berlin Wall went up. She was accepted to teach second grade. She taught at the army post right outside Bremerhaven, Germany during the 1961-1962 school year. After Germany, she taught in Lehi, UT and then moved out to teach in Berkeley, CA. She taught there for several years and during that time met her husband. After she got married, she taught in Walnut Creek, CA for several years. She took time off teaching school while she raised her children and then went back to work teaching at Bell Hill in Grass Valley, CA where she taught kindergarten and first grade until her retirement in 2002.

Karla was able to travel throughout Europe during the time she was teaching school in Germany. She treasured this time and shared many fond stories of her explorations and the beauty she experienced.

Karla’s greatest loves in her life are her husband, her children, her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, her family and her religion. Karla treasured her children. She was a continual force for good in their life and was always present for them. Boy, did she love her grandkids and great grandkids. Karla had a gratitude journal and mentioned them often – how much she loved them and how happy she was each time she spent time with them. Know you are loved! Karla kept in close contact with her brothers and sisters and loved to visit and talk with them. They were so important to her always.

Karla loved flowers and gardening. She planted flowers everywhere she lived. She loved perennials and watching them come back year after year. Her first year living in Nevada City, she learned all the deer’s favorite flowers, not by choice. She quickly studied which flowers she could plant in the yard that the deer would not bother and which she had to plant in her garden that had deer fencing.

Karla is survived by her children Krista Ann (Jeffrey) Tudor, Phoenix, Arizona; Thomas Jonathan Nix, Nevada City, California; her grandchildren, Brittani Nicole (Russell) Brackett, Nevada City, California; Christopher Michael Nix, Soledad, California; Trae Jonathan Nix, Penngrove, California; great-grand-children Jett Hudson Brackett and Ryder Vernon Brackett, both of Nevada City, California; her sister Jennie Gayle Thueson, Salt Lake City, Utah; and her brother Kenneth Lee Thueson, Tucson, Arizona.

Karla is proceeded in death by her husband of over 60 years, Thomas Elden Nix; her grandson, Scott Thomas Hollingshead; her parents Jay Roberts Thueson Sr and Beth Karla Brown Thueson; her brother Jay Roberts Thueson, Jr; and sister Marcia Beth (Charles) Srogus.

The memorial service will be held Thursday, April 23, 2026 at 12.30pm at the LDS chapel, 615 Hollow Way, Nevada City, CA. All are welcome.
