Paul Appleby

Paul Appleby passed peacefully in his home in Grass Valley, California, on Saturday, March 29, 2026, after a short illness. Paul was born in Derby, England, but resided in Grass Valley for the last 25 years. While Paul loved his adopted town of Grass Valley, he remained a true Brit at heart with his dry sense of humor and love of English football. Paul enjoyed trains and had a website dedicated to the railways of England. He also enjoyed fishing, computers, tending his backyard fishpond with its enormous Koi Carp, and his and his wife’s very lucky adopted cat family. He enjoyed the good fun and lively conversations when he and Chris gathered for Full Moon parties. He slowly acquired a taste for American food, but always felt the curry and fish and chips here were never on par with those “across the pond.”
Paul is survived by his wife of 23-1/2 years, E. Christina Dabis-Appleby of Grass Valley, his son Christopher of Basingstoke, England, and his ex-wife, but good friend to the end, Lynda Charman of Neath, Wales. Paul was predeceased by his father Tom, his mother Emily, his son Thomas, and his sister Pauline.
Per his request, there will be no service for him, and his ashes will travel back to England with Christopher, where Paul will be reunited with his son Thomas. The family would like to thank Amy and Gary Cubillo, Paul’s neighbors, for their help during his illness, his sister-in-law Rita Behr for her assistance in keeping things running so well, and Hospice for their care and compassion during Paul’s last days. Paul’s family are incredibly grateful for the help and support that Cathy Wilcox-Barnes has given throughout this difficult time.
