Robert James DeMers Sr.

Robert James DeMers Sr., a devoted World War II veteran, loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and great-great grandfather, passed peacefully on February 8, 2026 at the age of 100.

Born on August 15,1925 in St. Paul MN, he grew up during the Great Depression and answered the call to serve his country when WWII began. In 1944 he enlisted in the Navy at the age of 18 as a Signalman and was among those who landed on the black sands of Iwo Jima with the 3rd wave during the fierce invasion of February 1945-one of the most intense and pivotal battles of the Pacific Theater. He carried the quiet pride and resilience of that experience throughout his life.

After the war, he returned home and married the love of his life, Jackie Hohlt, building a family of 6 children rooted in faith, hard work and kindness. He worked as a traffic manager for Hills Brothers Coffee, raised his family in Cupertino CA, enjoyed playing golf and bowling, was a wonderful dancer, and as an 80-year-old was a pickleball gold medal champion. His unwavering faith sustained him through life’s joys and challenges, and he found deep comfort in hymns like How Great Thou Art.

Dad lived a full century marked by resilience, love, gratitude and faith in his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

He is survived by his six children: Ed DeMers, Mike DeMers, John DeMers (Mila) Cathy Sharp (Walt) Robert DeMers Jr (Bridget) Barbara Johnston (Terry): 26 grandchildren; 49 great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great grandchildren; along with many dear friends and extended family.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of almost 70 years, Jackie (who passed away 3 years ago)

His legacy of courage, quiet strength, faith, and steadfast love will endure in all who knew him.
