A Memorial Service will be held at Hooper & Weaver Mortuary on Monday, February 23, 2026, at 11:00 a.m., followed by a graveside service at 12:00 p.m. at Greenwood Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Grass Valley.

Jim was born on September 10, 1955, at Jones Hospital to Aldo Valentine Casci and Jeanette Gallino Casci. He was a twin, born alongside his brother John. From an early age, Jim developed a deep love for the outdoors and for the community he would faithfully serve throughout his life.
Jim is survived by his beloved wife of 50 years, Kathleen Casci; his five children, Dr. Talia Casci Noethig (Michael), Nicholas Casci (Jennifer), Kyle Casci, Ashtyn Veimau (Lokasio), and Anthony Casci. He is also survived by his sister Linda Guess of Martinez; his twin brother John Casci of Grass Valley; his sister- and brother-in-law Dana and Brian Deily; his cherished grandchildren: Avery Casci, Ella Casci, Cashus Casci, Gunnar Julian, Bella Casci, Aniyah Veimau, and Mahina Veimau; and by numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Aldo and Jeanette Casci; his father- and mother-in-law, Don Brown Sr. and Mary Frances Brown; his sister, Mary Najolia; and his niece, Allison Deily.

Jim worked at SPD Market until 1987, when he enrolled in the Police Academy through Butte College. He proudly served as a captain for the volunteer rescue squad and EMT for Nevada City 49er Fire. After graduating from the academy, Jim began his career with the Nevada County Sheriff’s Department as a Deputy Sheriff and Investigator, eventually retiring as a Sergeant in 2013.

Jim loved the outdoors, hunting, fishing, and especially people. He was widely known for his kindness, fairness, and understanding nature. Even while serving in law enforcement, he was respected for treating everyone with dignity regardless of their background or circumstances. He always saw the best in others and encouraged them to succeed. Long after his retirement, community members would stop him to thank him for the compassion and respect he had shown them. To many, he was affectionately known as the “nice twin.” He was also a devoted and die-hard San Francisco Giants fan.

In retirement, Jim shared his passion for local history through the Facebook page, “You know you’re from Nevada County if….,” where he connected people through stories, facts, and memories of the community he loved. He spent countless joyful hours on the baseball and football fields, proudly watching his grandchildren play and cheer.

Jim was a devoted member of Saint Canice Parish in Nevada City.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Jim’s honor to Nevada City Little League.

Jim’s legacy of kindness, service, and love for family and community will live on in all who knew him.
