Torben Nielsen

April 14, 1963 – December 9, 2025
Torben Holmgard Nielsen passed away on December 9th, 2025 in Grass Valley at the age of 62.
Torben was born in Bording, Denmark to Jens Peter and Else Nielsen on April 14, 1963. Torben often shared fond memories of growing up on his family farm, Meldgard. In 1988-89 he participated in a year-long agricultural trainee exchange program, working on farms in Minnesota and Colorado. Upon Torben’s return he and Jacque met while both working on a potato farm in Give, Denmark. The following year, at 28, Torben moved to California and married Jacque. Torben was a Dane through and through, but loved his life here in the US.
Torben worked in construction for several years and then with NID on the utility crew for almost 18 years. He was known for his honesty, positive attitude, and strong work ethic. Torben was diagnosed with Early Onset Parkinson’s Disease when he was 36, and went on to handle Parkinson’s Disease and Parkinson’s Dementia with little complaint. His faith in God gave him a quiet strength.
One of Torben’s favorite hobbies was rototilling gardens through-out Nevada County (keeping his farming heritage alive!). Torben was quick to help others, using his mechanical know-how whenever he could. Torben enjoyed spending time with his family. They were one of the greatest joys in his life.
Torben is survived by his wife of 34 years, Jacque Costa-Nielsen, his daughter Olivia (Nicholas) Hastert, and his son Simon Nielsen. Torben is also survived by his family in Denmark: mother Else Nielsen, brother Ole (Tina) Holmgaard Nielsen, sister Anne Mette (Henning) Jensen, and 6 nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his father, Jens Peter Nielsen.
There will be a celebration of Torben’s life at Calvary Bible Church in Grass Valley on March 14 at 1:00pm.
