Thomas Elden Nix

Thomas Elden Nix, age 90, of Nevada City, California passed away December 12, 2025. Thomas was born November 19, 1935, in Sacramento, California to Ralph Elden Nix and Mildred May Jackson Nix. Thomas, “Tom” was proud of growing up in Sacramento and was extremely close with his family. Tom received a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration with a minor in Speech Arts from Sacramento State College. In 1964 Tom moved to Berkley, California where he met the love of his life and best friend, Karla Ann Thueson. They were married June 18, 1965 in the Oakland, California temple. Tom and Karla raised their children while living in Walnut Creek, San Jose and Nevada City, California where they finally enjoyed their retirement years.
Tom was devoted to his savior, Jesus Christ, and loved to actively participate in his religion, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. A treasured time for Tom was the two and a half years he served his mission in Uruguay; the Uruguay Montevideo Mission. He often shared stories of his mission including the ship he sailed down there and his sister meeting him after his mission to travel around South America. He loved the Spanish language he learned to speak while in Uruguay and worked to keep his Spanish fluent to the day of his passing.
Tom was also proud of his service in the Air National Guard of California. He served for 5 years from 1959 to 1964. Tom enjoyed telling his family about when he was promoted to lead his squadron and how happy that made him.
Tom was an avid gardener throughout his life. Everywhere he lived, he constructed a garden in the back yard. His biggest garden, in Nevada City, was a quarter acre large and one year he planted 72 tomato plants.
Travel was important to Tom. Growing up, his family took a road trip and visited every state in the continental US. In addition to traveling around South America with his sister Carolyn Ann Nix, after the completion of his mission, he was fortunate to travel around Europe with his brother Ronald Adrian Nix; traveling in a VW bus! As his family grew up, he and Karla planned many fun trips around the western United States, Mexico and Canada including lots of camping. He and Karla traveled to Hawaii several times. In his last adventure, he and Karla were able to go to Jerusalem, Egypt and cruise on the Nile, where he rode a camel and saw the pyramids.
Tom’s greatest loves in life are his wife, his children, his religion, the Spanish language and his service within his religion. Beyond this Tom loved music. Growing up he played the trombone and was in his high school marching band. Tom loved to sing and had a beautiful voice. He was in many choirs and various musical groups through his life.
Tom had the talent and a love to talk with others. His family called it his “gift of gab”. He loved to walk up to anyone and strike up a conversation. A funny memory from his family is that when they went places or on vacations, they would meet back at a certain point in time so Tom could go off to meet and talk with new people. Tom also had a keen sense of humor. He loved to laugh and joke and make others laugh.
Thomas is survived by his wife of over 60 years, Karla Ann Thueson Nix; his children Krista Ann (Jeffrey) Tudor, Phoenix, Arizona; Thomas Jonathan Nix, Nevada City, California; his grandchildren, Brittani Nichole (Russell) Brackett, Nevada City, California; Christopher Michael Nix, Susanville, California; Trae Jonathan Nix, Penngrove, California; great-grand-children Jett Hudson, Ryder Vernen Brackett, Nevada City, California; and his brother Ronald Adrian (Elizabeth) Nix, American Fork, Utah.
