In Loving Memory of Spencer Cletus Osterholt

August 17, 1944 – November 1, 2025

Spencer Cletus Osterholt, 81, of Grass Valley, California, passed away peacefully at home on November 1, 2025, after a brief illness. With his wife and daughters by his side, he peacefully entered his final rest.

Born on August 17, 1944, in Kansas City, Missouri, to Cletus and Eileen Osterholt (Schulte). Spence grew up in Pleasanton, California, before his family settled in Grass Valley. He graduated from Mount Saint Mary’s High School and later attended Chico State University. In 1972, he began his career at Nevada Union High School, where he taught and led the business department for three decades.

In 1967, Spence married Sandra L. Cogdill, his partner in every sense of the word. Together, they built a life grounded in love, laughter, and the natural beauty of Grass Valley, sharing his appreciation for the outdoors with their daughters, Kirsten Osterholt-Martin and Jennifer Osterholt-Warner.

Spence found peace in the simple rhythms of nature—bass fishing, walking with Sandy and their loyal schnauzer Willie, or spending a quiet day on the golf course. He loved time on the lake, watching baseball, and sharing his humor with family and friends.

He will be remembered for his gentle spirit, quick wit, and the creative nicknames that became a signature of his affection.

Spence is survived by his beloved wife, Sandy; daughters Kirsten Martin and Jennifer Warner; sons-in-law Sean Warner and Lloyd Martin, III; grandchildren Emma and Maxwell Martin; and siblings Stephen, Robert, Thomas Osterholt, and Kathy Andrews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Cletus and Eileen Osterholt, his sister Carolyn Kissell, and his dear uncle, Dick Osterholt.

Those wishing to honor Spence’s memory may make donations to Foothills Compassionate Care. The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the hospice care for their kindness and comfort during his final days.

May he rest in the everlasting peace he so often found in the quiet beauty of the world around him.
