George William Bryant, a lifelong educator, veteran, and dedicated community leader, passed away peacefully on September 15, 2025 at the age of 93. Born at Jones Memorial Hospital on July 29, 1932, George grew up in Grass Valley, where he attended local schools and graduated from Grass Valley High School in 1950.

After graduation, George pursued higher education at Sierra College, CSU Chico, and Pepperdine University. His commitment to service began early—at just 15 years old, he enlisted in the California National Guard and later served on active duty with the United States Air Force. He went on to complete nearly five years of active duty before continuing in reserve components, ultimately retiring in 1992 as a Senior Chief Petty Officer in the U.S. Naval Reserve.

Following his first marriage, George married his high school classmate, Ramona Carley Trentham. Together, they enjoyed many years of travel across the United States and abroad. As golf partners and best friends, they shared countless games with friends at Alta Sierra Country Club, where they were beloved members.

George dedicated his career to education. He began teaching in North Highlands and served as an analyst for the California Department of Education. His first administrative role was as Principal of Ophir School in Placer County. Returning to Nevada County, he served as Principal of Hennessey and Bell Hill Schools before becoming Supervisor of Instruction for the Nevada County Office of Education. In 1974, George was elected Nevada County Superintendent of Schools, a role he held until 1978. He later served as Nevada Joint Union High School District Assistant Superintendent before being appointed Superintendent in 1978. He retired in 1990 after a distinguished career spanning decades of leadership in teaching, counseling, and adult education.

Beyond his professional life, George was deeply committed to his community. He served as Past Commander of Frank Gallino Post of the American Legion, Past President and Charter Member of both Cousin Jacks and Gold Country Lions, and Past Big Sir of Branches 78 and 124 of Sons in Retirement. He was also a proud member of Native Sons of the Golden West, Nevada City Lodge BPOE, Madison Lodge F&AM, Navy League, Nevada County Historical Society, and the Grass Valley and Nevada County Sportsmen’s Clubs.

George is survived by his daughters Georgia (Ed) Jacobs, Evelyn (Gary) Waters, Susan (Dennis) Welsh, Joanne Bryant Sefton (Nancy)and Jane Keolker (Clarke) and his sister Georgene Haak of Missouri. He is also lovingly remembered by his stepdaughter Linda (Greg) Dunbar, stepson Mark Trentham (Melody), eight grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his loving wife, Ramona and his brother, Ronald.

George will be remembered for his unwavering commitment to education, his service to country and community, and his deep love for family and friends. His legacy will live on through the many lives he touched.
