Philip Steven English

February 10, 1948 – July 18, 2025

Philip Steven English passed away surrounded by family on July 18, 2025, in Roseville, CA, at 77. Born in San Francisco, California, on February 10, 1948, Phil grew up on the Peninsula of the San Francisco Bay Area, where he developed a lifelong love of baseball. He played through high school before joining the U.S. Air Force. He served honorably, including a tour in Vietnam, and returned home with the strength and quiet resilience that would stay with him for the duration of his life.

Phil settled back in Redwood City with his first wife, Connie, where he began his family and built a successful career as an electrical contractor. He proudly founded English Electric, a business where many family members and friends had the opportunity to work and learn under his guidance. Known for his skill, integrity, and quiet leadership, Phil was a respected mentor and friend to many in his community and trade.

In his later years, Phil made his home in Grass Valley, CA, with his beloved wife of 25 years, Catherine English. Together, they shared a deep love for road-tripping, visiting family and friends, and exploring the natural beauty of the world around them. Phil found joy in the outdoors, spending time at his Lake Tahoe cabin, skiing in the winter, and especially during hunting and fishing seasons. An avid outdoorsman, he cherished early mornings in the duck blind with his children, sons-in-law, and grandchildren, creating countless memories.

Phil was an active member of the Native Sons and the Grass Valley Sportsmen’s Club, where he found friendship and fulfillment volunteering at the local fair and annual fundraising events. In more recent years, he looked forward to Friday morning breakfasts with his close group of buddies, a weekly tradition he looked forward to.

He is survived by his loving wife, Cathy; his daughters, Jackie English and Jenelle Auerbach (Scott); his stepdaughters, Jillian Anderson (Matthew) and Kristin Ely (Jacob Stern); and his cherished grandchildren: Nick Williams, Brooke and Bo Auerbach, August Anderson, and Wyatt and Eva Stern. Just eight months ago, he was overjoyed to become a great-papa to Lily Williams.

Phil was a man of few words but abundant warmth. He showed deep interest in the lives of those around him, always listening, always caring. His smile, accompanied by those bright blue eyes, could light up a room and make you feel truly seen. His kindness, generosity, and quiet strength left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him.

A celebration of Phil’s wonderful life will be held on October 5th at the Nevada City Elk’s Lodge (#518).
