Gary Filer passed away on August 1, 2025 at the age of 88.

Memorial Services will held on Wednesday, August 13, 2025 at 11:30 a.m. at 615 Hollow Way in Nevada City.

Gary was born on December 22, 1936 in Afton, WY to Maciel and Lowell Sessions. He grew up in Grass Valley, and later moved to Rough & Ready where he was raised by his mother Maciel and dad Larry Filer. The Bay Area is where he eventually met his soulmate Marg and married her in 1961. After the National Guard and working for NID, Gary retired after a long career at Safeway and enjoyed many years with his family.

Gary enjoyed bowling, watching the Giant and 49ers, reading books and all things nature related.

Gary’s affable nature and witty sense of humor will be missed by all who knew him.

Survivors are daughter Melynda Cathers of Roseville, CA and son Greg Roofner of Conway, AR, sisters Yvonne Chappel (and husband Butch) Maxine Swan (and husband Cy) Marilyn Meservey, and Jacci Martin as well as six grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren and six great-great grandchildren.

He’s preceded in death by parents Larry and Maciel Filer, wife Marg, daughter Dianna, sister Margene and brothers-in-law Gene Elliott, Dennis Meservey, and Don Martin and great granddaughter Haley Dianna Benjamin.
