Donald (Don) Flath

Donald (Don) Flath passed away on November 22, 2024 in Grass Valley, CA. He was 89 years old. Don was born during the Great Depression on December 24,1934 to Robert and Olive Flath in Willows, California. Growing up as a young boy, going to school, and working in the rice fields during the Depression and World War II formulated his strong work ethic that continued during his adult life.
After graduating from Willows High School in 1952, Don joined the U.S. Navy in December during the Korean War and spent four years as a Hospital Corpsman.
In February of 1957, Don enrolled in Chico State College on the G.I Bill. During that time, he met Margaret (Maggy) Johnson from Elk Creek, CA. They were married in 1958 in the Elk Creek Community Church. Don and Maggy remained in Chico until he graduated with a degree in Industrial Arts.
After graduation from Chico State College, Don accepted a teaching job at Nevada Union High School in 1961. He taught mechanical drafting, architectural drafting, and various industrial arts classes for 33 years. During the summer months, he was employed with the U.S. Forest Service. Don coached football for 31 years and junior varsity basketball for 8 years. He loved seeing his football players at the junior varsity level win the California Athletic League for 17 years without a league loss. Don also felt fortunate to coach football with his colleagues.
Don had many interests, especially fishing. He spent many years fishing with his longtime friend, teacher, and football coach Gary Musick. He also became a gifted wood carver and was a member of the Gold Country Carvers. Don enjoyed entering his wood carvings of various animals, especially wildlife, in competitions. He developed interests in golfing with friends, gardening, bowling and traveling throughout the United States with Maggy.
Don and Maggy were married for 43 years until Maggy’s untimely passing in 2001. He developed a longtime companionship and relationship with Linda Mullins, including her family, of Sacramento, CA until her passing in 2021.
He is survived by his two sons, Eric (Michelle), Brian (Sherilyn), grandson Craig (Michelle) and a large number of in-laws, nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to extend their deep appreciation to the wonderful staff at The Cascades of Grass Valley and caring members of the Hospice of the Foothills.
As per Dad’s request, there will be no funeral service. We are deeply saddened and will miss Dad’s presence but are comforted to know that he has fulfilled his final wish to be with Mom.
